WIC Food Program

What It Is

WIC is a supplemental food program that provides nutrition counseling, breastfeeding support, education, nutritious foods and referrals to healthcare services. WIC improves the health of pregnant, breastfeeding, postpartum women, infants and children up to age 5.

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) provides:

Nutrition Counseling
Healthy Foods
Breastfeeding Support
Referrals to other Community Resources

WIC is important because healthy foods help children to develop normally. Good nutrition helps prevent against future health problems.

WIC services are available at all ten of our county health departments.

You can participate in WIC if you:

Are pregnant, have recently had a baby, are breastfeeding or have a child under age five
Live in Kentucky
Have a family income less than WIC income guidelines or receive Medicaid, or Food Stamps
Medical and/or nutritional risk factors
You or your family may be automatically income eligible if you or a household member receive Medicaid, SNAP benefits or KTAP.

Breastfeeding Service and Support

Research has shown that there is no better food than breast milk for a baby’s first year of life. It protects babies and their mothers from illness and promotes life-long good health. Breastfeeding also provides nutritional, economical and emotional benefits to mother and baby. Since a major goal of the WIC Program is to improve the nutritional status of infants, WIC mothers are encouraged to breastfeed their infants.
